POINTS OF INTEREST ON THE LIDO
|
On the way back from
the Alberoni to the centre, we suggest you to walk
or ride by the XVIII century Murazzi,
reaching the Excelsior Hotel and the Casino area.
Here rose another old fortress called “Quattro
Fontane” and now, in its place, between sea
and lagoon you can see the Casino
and the “Palazzo del Cinema”, built during
the thirties. They are the ideal places for many international
events, such as the Film festival, taking place every
year at the beginning of September. |

|
Just keep going along Via Dardanelli, flanked
by liberty-style houses and gardens, and you
will get to the Gran Viale, the all planted
with trees, a wide road which stretches all
through the island from lagoon to sea, connecting
the old district of S.Maria Elisabetta where
you can still find some small, renovated XIX
century hotels, with the Blue Moon, the brand
new building facing the sea. |
|
A shady lagoon promenade, flanked
by many liberty-style houses, takes you from the Votive
Church of S.Maria Elisabetta, built after World War
II in the main square, to S.Nicolò,
which once was the biggest fortress of the island.
Nowadays you can still visit the XVII century church
with its cloister, where the Serenissima used to celebrate
the “Sea wedding” on Ascension day : the
same ceremony still takes place by parading decorated
boats. |

|
Do not miss the old and charming
HEBREW CEMETARY, built in 1389,which
has been restored and can be easily visited.
|
Just nearby, you can see the NICELLI
AIRPORT, where small private jets
and some tourist planes can land. Flights
to Venice are permitted as well as parachute
drops.
